Heritage and Modernity - Royal Holloway, University of London
Benjamin J. Cheng's architectural photography series at Royal Holloway, University of London explores the compelling dialogue between Victorian Gothic grandeur and contemporary educational architecture. Set within the expansive Surrey campus, these images document how historic and modern structures coexist to create a distinctive academic environment.
The iconic Founder's Building, completed in 1886, dominates the series with its ornate red brick facade, elaborate terracotta detailing, and distinctive clock tower. Benjamin's symmetrical compositions emphasise the building's imposing scale and meticulous craftsmanship—characteristics of high Victorian ambition. Shot under pristine blue skies, these exterior views celebrate the building's theatrical presence within its landscaped grounds, where manicured lawns and pathways lead visitors toward its grand archway entrance.
Contrasting with this historic architecture, the series also documents the David Hockney Building, a contemporary addition to the campus. The modern structure's timber-clad facade, bold coloured signage, and dramatic skylights demonstrate how twenty-first-century educational design prioritises natural light and transparency. Benjamin's interior photographs reveal soaring atrium spaces where geometric timber beams frame views of the sky, creating bright, welcoming learning environments that stand in stark contrast to the Founder's Building's Gothic solemnity.
Through careful composition and attention to light, Benjamin captures Royal Holloway as a campus where architectural heritage and contemporary design philosophy exist in productive tension—each enhancing our understanding of the other.
